Growing up in the late 70s in an urban area of New Jersey, Richard was a doe-eyed, ginger-tinted 14 year old with a slender physique that only puberty could offer. Nicknamed, “Skinny Red One,” he was an eager police explorer thrilled to learn the ropes of the law. He watched in horror as two white uniformed officers cornered a black man between the passenger door and back seat of a patrol car. They beat his dark skin unmercifully with leather straps. At that very moment, the pedestal he had placed police officers on was demolished. He vowed from that day on to break the negative stereotypes of law enforcement. At once, he knew his life’s calling: to police with honor, to serve, protect, and help the public.
Earning a Doctor of Education (Ed. D.) in Educational Leadership, Richard has become a distinguished long term criminal justice professional and credited as the #1 Expert on Crime and Safety. Warmly referred to as “The Cop Doc,” he has devoted over 20 years in service. Richard is a Former Police Chief, Deputy Sheriff, Police Academy Instructor, Criminal Justice College Educator, and a Defensive Tactics and Firearms Instructor. Purposefully seeking out work in the most violent parts of the country, he paid his dues in the streets of Santé Fe, New Mexico. These boot and dirt ventures exposed Richard to the doldrums of crime along with a back pocket full of riveting stories.
